Conservative Treatment before looking at Surgery
In some cases, non-surgical treatments are the more appropriate solution.
Lifestyle Modifications
Minimise activities that aggravate the condition, i.e. Climbing.
Switch to low impact activities like swimming or cycling.
Loose excess weight to reduce stress on joints, resulting in less pain and increased function.
Physical Therapy
Specific exercises can help increase range of motion and flexibility, as well as help strengthen the muscles in your legs.
Assistive Devices
Using devices such as a cane or wearing a brace can be helpful in reducing strain on joints.
Natural Supplements
Natural supplements, exercise, healthy gut and good lifestyle choice all form part of a successful conservative treatment plan. This is also beneficial to apply to pre and post-surgery life.
OTC Medication
Over the counter medications, non narcotic pain relievers and anti inflammatories can alleviate symptoms, but like all medications, they can cause side effects and interact with other medications you are taking.
NSAIDs
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, are another type of pain reliever. They’re available both over-the-counter and by prescription.
A COX-2 inhibitor, such as Celebrex, is a special type of NSAID that may cause fewer gastrointestinal side effects.
Cortisone Injections
Also known as steroid injections, cortisone injections reduce inflammation caused by arthritis, easing pain and swelling in the joint.
Other Remedies
Application of heat helps to relax muscles, improve circulation and reduce stiffness in painful joints. Alternatively, applying cold to inflamed and swollen joints will soothe any pain and stiffness.
